In 2002, a 3-year study was released by the New York Council on the Arts revealing alarming statistics that roughly ONLY 20% OF PROFESSIONAL THEATRE ARTISTS TODAY ARE WOMEN. Although women submit about half of all the works available to artistic directors, ONLY 17% OF PRODUCED PLAYS ARE WRITTEN BY WOMEN, and 16% HAVE FEMALE DIRECTORS.
Although great strides have been made in other fields, women continue to face enormous employment discrimination in the arts and media.
Women and projects of interest to women are greatly under- represented in theatre. The Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Project was designed to address the critical need for increased opportunities for women’s voices and perspectives in the Performing Arts, as well as providing educational opportunities and performances that represent women on a broader scale.
It is the goal of The LAWTP to work in collaboration with theatres, artists and other professionals to increase opportunities for women in all aspects of the performing arts.
